In-service annual inspection is an ongoing yearly assessment performed at 12 month intervals by an independent, competent inspection body to ensure an amusement device is fit for further operation during its service life. All safety-critical aspects of the device such as structural, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, control systems etc. are assessed to ensure they have not deteriorated in any way that could cause danger. Following a satisfactory in-service annual inspection with any necessary remedial works completed, an inspection body will issue a Declaration of Operational Compliance (DOC) permitting a ride to operate for a further period of up to 12 months.
Further information on annual in-service inspection can be found in HSG 175: Fairgrounds and Amusement Parks – Guidance on safe practice, paragraphs 123 – 151.
